DIRECTOR OF NURSING

About the Job

Qualifications:

 

Registered Nursing license for the State of Florida.  Supervisory experience and experience working with people who are developmentally or intellectually disabled.  For purposes of effective communication with residents, families and staff must be able to see, hear, speak, read and write English.  Maintain the ability to stretch, push, pull, kneel, reach, twist, walk and stand for up to sixteen (16)  hours, up to three (3) times per week and  to perform the physical requirements of Safety Care.  Must demonstrate the ability to lift unassisted at least thirty five (35) lbs.

 

 

Job Duties

 

1.     Supervises, directs and evaluates nursing staff and activities specific to the residents’ needs in the ICF and assigned Group Home settings in all areas relating to health and nursing care and assures skill acquisition and mastery by the staff.

 

2.     Oversees all nursing clinical operations which includes but is not limited to  pharmacy, nursing, infection Control oral hygiene programs, medical, medication or other order changes, new admission and post treatment illness or injury evaluations, review of abnormal findings from testings or reports,  appointments etc  and ensures  follow through.

 

3.     Conducts assessments and provides care for residents as necessary and provides staff with education and instruction on resident specific or global needs.

 

4.     Coordinates medical services by working closely with staff and Health Care Providers and staff to ensure optimal health for the residents.

 

5.     Coordinates and implements all healthcare related training necessary to meet the needs of the residents on an ongoing basis.  Actively participates and provides education related to nursing and health related issues and techniques, medication administration, on site validations and revalidations, special route validations, as well as initial and annual Health Issues training as necessary. 

 

6.     Participates in all functions associated with the Executive Nursing Committee, ICF and Group Home Committees as required.  Coordinates and Chairs the Infection Control Meeting as well as  clinical and nursing meetings in the ICF setting and ensures follow through to resolution of any identified  clinical issues.  Collaborates with other team members to ensure consistent service delivery throughout the system.

 

7.     Conducts regular facility rounds in the ICF as well as announced and unannounced visits to the assigned Group Homes to ensure that the facility and homes are in compliance with regulations and the health related needs of the residents are being met.  Additionally actively  participates in visits from APD, and  the development of any plans of correction and ensures follow through with compliance  as necessary

 

8.     Routinely reviews resident records and reports of injuries, accidents, and illnesses to ensure proper follow up until the issue is resolved

 

9.     Ensures that the Nursing budget is maintained. 

 

10.  Conducts all employee annual physicals

 

11.  Ensures residents’ rights and promotes optimal quality of life standards.  Reports any incident of abuse in accordance with facility procedure and the Disabled Persons Abuse Negligence Act.  Follows Employees screening requirements and uses screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.  Provides employees with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.  Provides employees with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with individuals.  Requires employees to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.  Responds quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organizations progressive disciplinary procedures.  Responds seriously and confidently to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.  Follows mandated reporting requirements.  Communicates to all employees the organization’s commitment to protect their individuals from abuse.  Reports essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.  

 

12.  Maintain 24-hour on-call availability for the facility and Group Homes and participates in the on call rotation with other RN staff.

 

 

  1. Demonstrates understanding of, and complies with, all policies related to safety.  Performs work safely and without injury to self or others. Identifies hazards or dangerous behaviors in the environment and takes immediate action to avoid, mitigate or eliminate, and report hazardous conditions or unsafe behaviors.  Ensures the safety of self, residents/consumers, co-workers, families, guardians and visitors at all times.

 

14.  Ensures all direct reports understand all policies related to safety and their role in ensuring safety for themselves, for residents/consumers, for co-workers and for families, guardians and visitors.  Provides training on job-specific safe work procedures.  Confirms that employees know and comply with reporting procedures.  Recognizes, reinforces and rewards employees in tangible ways for safe work performance and behaviors, i.e., public or private verbal recognition, informal written notes, formal commendations, and available incentives.

 

15.  Punctuality and regular attendance at the work-site, including required extra hours,  are essential functions of the job in order to ensure safe and appropriate levels of care for our residents at all times.  Adheres to attendance policy.  Reports to work on time as scheduled.  Completes required training on time and regularly attends staff meetings.

 

16.  Project a professional appearance and a willing, positive and courteous expression in performing tasks.  Cooperate with fellow workers, supervisors, residents, visitors in performing tasks.

 

17.  Ensure compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations.  Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor/Program Director.
